A woman is recovering in her home after getting shot twice in the back of the neck last weekend in a murder-suicide that took the lives of a 6-year-old girl, the girl’s mother and the girl’s father.
Makyah Page’s actions likely saved her own 5-year-old-daughter’s life as Sunday’s shooting unfolded at her home on Weavers Circle.
“I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through it or see it,” Page said.
Sunday’s shooting left the shooter, Daquan Jones, his girlfriend Kiera Massenburg and their 6-year-old daughter Zoey Jones dead.
According to Page, an argument between Jones and Massenburg set him off. She said Jones first shot his daughter before shooting Massenburg.
“Just out of nowhere, he shot Zoey,” Page said.
Another friend at the gathering, Devonte Ricks, was also shot. Ricks is talking and in stable condition.
“He was able to shoot Ricks, and then he came for me, and I just remember him walking towards me and [I tried] to run and I still got hit,” Page said.
“I can’t get the image out of my head to see both of their eyes,” Page said of Massenburg and Zoey Jones.
The day before the shooting, authorities had released Daquan Jones from the Edgecombe County Jail on assault charges, according to court records.
Page said Zoey Jones didn’t want to leave the gathering late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
“She was screaming to the top of her lungs, ‘I don’t wanna go!’” Page said.
Zoey Jones wanted to stay with her friend, Bella, Page’s 5-year-old daughter. Daquan Jones told his daughter no, according to Page.
Page said the family was trying to get in the car when Daquan Jones shot the girl and then her mother.
“When he shot them, they were in the driver’s seat,” Page said. “She was holding [Zoey] in her lap.”
Daquan Jones shot Page next. She ran into her home for safety with him running behind her. Page’s daughter Bella then ran to a neighbor’s house to escape getting shot.
“He came in there and put the gun to my head, and I’m just begging and pleading him,” Page said.
Daquan Jones got in the car, having to move Massenburg and Zoey Jones, who were wounded, out of the way so that he could drive. He ended up at a Nash County home where he turned the gun on himself, police said.
Family, friends and community members are scheduled to hold a balloon release for Massenburg and Zoey Jones at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 at Moe & D’s Restaurant Grill & Bar in Rocky Mount.
