A man was shot Tuesday morning by Wake County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
Around 1:30 a.m., deputies responded to a home on Benar Drive in southern Wake County. It was at the home where a man was threatening to harm himself, according to the office.
State investigators said three Wake County deputies responded to the home. At one point, Brian Jacob Monroe, 32, was shot and transported to a hospital with serious injuries. He was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.
Monroe’s wife told WRAL News her son called 911 threatening suicide, but the situation became confusing when law enforcement arrived. Monroe’s wife said they did not know that law enforcement was at their door and did not hear them announce their arrival or see flashing lights. Her husband went to the door with his gun, prepared to defend his family. She showed WRAL doorbell surveillance camera footage showing he was armed but it does not appear he fired a shot.
The wife said Monroe was shot in the leg, stomach and arm. She said he is expected to survive his injuries. Monroe is the stepfather of the son.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) said one deputy was also injured. The deputy was treated and released from the hospital.
The wife showed WRAL News Ring camera footage of the incident, but is choosing not to share it publicly.

The radio traffic also suggests the severity of the man’s injuries:
“Gunshot wounds to the arm and abdomen, no officers hit at this time that we know of.”
The WRAL Breaking News Tracker was at the scene early Tuesday morning, where forensics teams were seen handling a gun. Drone 5 video showed a large response at the home, with multiple vehicles surrounding the home blocked off with yellow tape.
A deputy’s car was also surrounded by tape.
The SBI is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure for shootings involving law enforcement.
Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe said there will also be an internal investigation. The three deputies were placed on administrative leave.
“We have asked the SBI to lead an independent investigation, and at the same time our office will
be conducting an internal investigation and review,” Rowe said.
